Have you ever seen a soul?
I have.
My kids know this story so well that sometimes they tell it along with me.
It is 100% true, though, and by damn, I have witnesses.
I am a registered nurse, and I used to work on a cardiac floor in a hospital. Patients would come straight to my floor from the emergency room before, after, or during a heart attack.
We would get them ready for a heart catheterization or sometimes open-heart surgery. The patients would come directly back to us after their procedure.
We would also take care of heart failure patients, defibrillators, specific heart medications, and really any condition that required a heart monitor.
One night we received a patient who had been in a motorcycle accident. The labs showed that he had had a heart attack, and that was why he crashed.
His name was James, and he was forty years old. He had a pretty wife and three young kids.
He had a rather severe head wound and was in bad shape.
He would open his eyes now and then, sometimes he could squeeze my hand if I asked a question, but he never spoke.
The nurses would often go into his room and talk to him because they wanted him to know he wasn’t alone.
